INTRODUCTION
The
vineyards of Algodon Wine Estates are located in the foothills of
the Sierra Pintada Mountains in San Rafael, Mendoza. With vines
dating back to the 1940’s, this two thousand acre estate was
developed by Scott Mathis and his partners and is nestled in the
heart of Argentina’s wine country.
Our vineyards are located between two nourishing rivers sustained by
the purest glacial runoff from the snowcapped Andes Mountains. As a
result, our mineral rich soil has distinctive properties and
considerable benefits that contribute to our ability to produce top
wines. In addition to Algodon’s superior vineyards, our antique
olive groves and an abundant variety of fruit and nut orchards
further enrich our bountiful estate, which embraces eco-friendly
concepts and ecologically responsible science for the production of
our fine products.
Algodon Wine Estates has a winery that was designed with the purpose
of producing top quality wines, which are made from the highest
standards.
Guests enjoy internationally award-winning accommodation, guided
vineyard tours, a world-class winery, the finest traditional Argentine
cuisine from our prize-winning restaurant, tennis, and 18-holes of
championship golf that literally play through vineyards.
WINERY
At the
heart of Algodon Wine Estates we finf the Winery, surrounded by
vineyards and the golf course and the Sierra Pintada and Andes on the
horizon. The wine portfolio includes: Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Bonarda, Chardonnay, Malbec Rosé and Gran Reserva.
We designed the winery with the sole purpose of producing top quality
wines, which are made from the highest standards. Our facilities include
modern stainless steel tanks and concrete, an underground cellar which
provides ideal temperature and humidity, and the finest French oak
barrels for wine aging. These factors combine to ensure our ability to
produce year after year the best wines.
The winery is located at 800 meters above sea level, in a structure that
contains three main sections: the area of Development and Conservation,
La Cava, and the Laboratory and tasting room, featuring a large view of
our vineyards and the golf course, with the Sierra Pintada in the
background.
La Cava (cellar) has a capacity to store more than 71,000 bottles.
The farm has 300 hectares in a stunning and incomparable scenery. The
varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Malbec, Syrah,
Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Verdot.
New Vines
The planting of new vineyards began in 1997. With a total of 51
hectares, trellises is 2 meters tall, with three wires and a planting
distance of 3 meters between rows and 1.5 m between plants. The
conduction system is "pythons bilateral cordon", where pruning is
different from old vines, as all the grapes are available on wire load
at the same level, through which flow both strands of the plant.
Thus the sun exposure of clusters is much more open, work will also
facilitate quality improvement as thinning, deshooting, leaf and speeds
up the harvest. The yields range between 8,000 and 12,000 kg / hectare
in accordance with the types of wine grapes that will be used. The
mechanical and manual work culture are similar to low vineyards.
Irrigation was performed by traditional or drip system. The latter
allows to regulate the water needed by the strain in a timely manner but
with the difference that the humidity is maintained steadily, achieving
a unique balance. The results in terms of quality of grapes obtained are
optimal. Through this system are also performed fertilization
operations. These vineyards are protected with anti-hail net, Granbuille
system.
Old Vines
It is low trellises in 1946. They're made of 21 hectares, and formerly
were called "French vineyards. 7 varieties were planted to grapes in the
form of interleaved, but harvested individually, looking for quality,
flavor, tannins and fruit varieties Malbec and Cabernet and Bonarda
color and structure.
We also have the white variety is Semillon, special fruity wine. They
are planted at a distance of 2.2 m. between rows and 1.2 m. between
plants, with a driving bass with three-wire trellis.
The irrigation of these vines is done through the traditional system,
inherited from the Indians that allowed huarpes transform the desert
into oasis for medium and small canals to reach the place where will the
irrigation water by gravity, flooding the planting area.
