INTRODUCTION
Wine has been made at the
Castillo Perelada since the Middle Ages, as shown in several documents
and parchments from the period to be found in the library. When Miguel
Mateu bought this ensemble of monuments in 1923, one of his primary
objectives was to revitalize the wine producing tradition, a tradition
that is more alive than ever these days and which has incorporated the
most modern technology to create wines that make full use of the nuances
of the soils and vines of the Empordà.
With its origins going back to the Middle Ages, the grandeur of the
Peralada Castle makes it one of the most emblematic landmarks of the
Empordà.
Making the best of the excellent land and climate in the Empordà region,
Castillo Peralada is nowadays one of the leading wineries in Spain.
The East wing of the castle is fortified, with two impressive towers at
the corners. The image of these two towers, reflected in the nearby
lake, has become the symbol of the wines and cavas of Castillo Perelada
The company has also a five-star hotel (see Hotel Golf Peralada) with
splendid views of the Pyrenees and golf course, ideal for relaxing and
sport. Two restaurants, a wine bar and the Garden Bar in the summer to
savor the full flavors of the Empordà region, pitch&putt, practice areas
and the Wine Spa.
WINERY
Technology and tradition combine to turn grape into must and must into
wine. Technological advances ensure that only the best grapes are used
and that the wine is made under the strictest quality standards, while
tradition provides experience in the art of winemaking.
The wine is first aged in the bodega's* 5,000 oak casks and the aroma
and flavour of the wood blend harmoniously with the fruity character of
the wine when later aged in the bottle.
Castillo Perelada currently owns over 150 hectares of vineyards in the
Empordà Designation of Origin region. With 22 hectares of red clay soil,
Finca Malaveïna is one of the bodega's* most representative vineyards,
and its unique characteristics lend the wine a distinctive character and
personality.
WINES
Outstanding among the wines produced by the company are the Gran
Claustro and Don Miguel Mateu, both meeting the conditions for an
“excellent” quality wine. Also outstanding is the Gran Claustro special
reserve cava, produced with all the nobility imposed by such an ancient
tradition, aged in the centuries-old cellars of the Convent del Carme.
The Champagne method is rigorously and professionally adhered to, with
just the addition of the charisma that characterises the Castillo
Perelada.
