GENERAL INFO>  BURGUNDY WINE REGION

The Burgundy region runs from Auxerre in the north down to Mâcon in the south, or down to Lyon if the Beaujolais area is included as part of Burgundy. Chablis, a white wine made from Chardonnay grapes, is produced in the area around Auxerre. The most famous wines produced here - those commonly referred to as Burgundies - are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. Burgundy has a higher number of Appellations d'origine contrôlées (AOCs) than any other French region, and is often seen as the most terroir-conscious of the French wine regions. The main Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, Commune or Village, and finally generic Bourgogne. Burgundy vineyards make up some 60,000 acres (240 km²) of production. The wines of the Burgundy region are well known and range from full-bodied reds such as Pommard and Corton through medium wines like Beaune to world class white wines such as the wonderfully dry Chablis or Chassagne Montrachet.
